Definition

A bill of materials (BOM) is the structured list of every component, sub-assembly, and quantity needed to produce one unit of a finished item — the structural recipe a work order is built from.

Why it matters

A BOM's accuracy directly determines whether production can run as planned — an incomplete or stale BOM produces a work order that can't actually be fulfilled against real components.

How it works

A BOM defines parent-child component relationships and quantities per unit; when a work order is created, its materials and operations are typically snapshotted from the active BOM at that moment, not re-read live from a structure that could change mid-order.

Example

A finished product's BOM lists 6 components at specific quantities each; releasing a work order against it requires proving those 6 components are actually available before production can start.
